Samantha had no idea what time it was when she heard the loud crashing sound. In fact, she wasn't even sure if she was awake or not when she heard it. She and Joby both jumped.

A banging this time, just next door.

"Evan. I forgot."

Joby moved off her, watching her tumble out of bed and head for the door. "Sure ya wanna go?" He fought back a yawn. "We can just find it tomorrow."

"We aren't having luck with that. I think talking to it would be better than killing it."

Standing outside Evan's door, she paused. Unlocking it suddenly seemed reckless, but what else could she do? She highly doubted they could have a conversation through the door. But what if he managed to escape?

To her surprise, she heard Evan's voice. "Sam. Open the door." While his voice was devoid of any emotion, it still filled her heart with hope and a touch of dread. He was talking. That was something.

"I want to talk with you," she said. "We can talk through the door."

"Sam, open it. I know you have the key. It's there in your hand."

A jolt in her heart, she glanced down at the key. How did he know?

"Why are you afraid of me?" Evan continued on. "I'm your twin."

"You're not my twin. Who are you?"

"I am Evan."

"No, who are you really?"

"Evan." Something had a lot of sass.

"I'll go back to bed if you don't tell me who you really are," Samantha said.

"Back to Joby, you mean? Always knew you preferred him over me." While the tone was still mechanical, there was something Evan-like about it at the same time. It kept her from walking off.

"No, you got it wrong. I love both of you. You and Joby," Samantha said.

"No, you don't. Go back and laugh with him some more. And leave me to face my demons alone."

"No, Evan! I...I'm here now, aren't I?" She knew she was playing right into the creature's tricks, but she couldn't help it. That grain of uncertainty of whom she was talking to was too much to ignore.

"If you care about me, then open the door," Evan continued. "I promise not to make a run for it."

Samantha hesitated, fingering the key.

"Sam, do you want to talk or not?"

"You better be telling the truth." She inserted the key and gave a twist.

Absolute silence.

Slowly pushing the door open, Samantha made her way in, being sure to block the doorway. As her eyes adjusted to the heavy darkness, she spotted her brother, standing only a few feet before her. The darkness prevented her from seeing his expression. She was beginning to feel shaky and sick again.

Evan spoke again. "Such a terrible feeling, isn't it?" His tone was starting to take on a slight arrogance.

"What do you want to talk about?"

"I thought you were the one who wished to speak to me."

"I do. But you can choose the topic."

"Shall I tell you about myself?"

Her heart picked up. "Sure."

"I...am Evan. I come from Fayville. My parents work for a successful company.
